Artist's Manual - Part Two

Artist's Manual - Part Two

Artist's Manual - Part Two: a ‘how-to’ guide for artists wanting to exhibit and sell their work.

Everything you need to know when you've finished your artwork!

•    Preparing your work for sale
•    Galleries, pricing, etiquette, and more!

This has been compiled to help artists who are in the early stages of their creative careers and would like to exhibit and sell their work.

From simple questions like, “How do I hang my painting?” to a deeper exploration of the etiquette needed to maintain a good relationship with a gallery, this guide is intended to give a practical overview of moving from the amateur stages of an artistic hobby to being a professional artist with sales under your belt.

I’ve worked ‘on both sides of the fence’ as a professional exhibiting artist and a gallery director as well as an art tutor and creative mentor. I’ve had a lot of experience dealing with the expectations of galleries as well as selling work privately; taking commissions; and working as an arts administrator, overseeing regional studio art tours involving dozens of artists.

I’m writing this to share years of experience – much of it learned by trial and error in a challenging roller-coaster industry – to give guidance for anyone who wants to take that ‘next step’ and is feeling somewhat unsure about how to go about it.

By following these different stages of preparation, you will be in a great position to separate yourself from the crowds of artists who are all trying to sell their work and establish good professional relationships with galleries – and clients – that will endure beyond the first sale.
